Chinese National Day 2011

A reception for the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China is held in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 29, 2011.
China's senior Party and state leaders attended a reception at central Beijing's Great Hall of the People on Thursday to celebrate the 62nd founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China (PRC).
Jia Qingling, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), addressed the reception in the presence of Vice President Xi Jinping and Vice Premier Li Keqiang. All the three are members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.
In his speech, the top political advisor extended, on behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, or China's Cabinet, a warm welcome to all the guests, particularly those from the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions (SARs), compatriots living in Taiwan, and overseas Chinese.
The CPC, which celebrates its 90th founding anniversary this year, led the Chinese people in a 28-year struggle before the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, and, in the glorious 62 years since, the Chinese people have made a miracle in building and developing the nation, said Jia.
"We'll never forget compatriots living in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas, who have stood together and shared the happiness and woe of the Chinese people from different ethnic groups, regardless of the situation," he said.
Jia thanked the leaders and governments of Hong Kong and Macao for what they have accomplished since the two SARs returned to the arms of the motherland in 1997 and 1999, respectively.
In securing the central government's continued assistance to the two SAR governments, Jia expressed his strong support for further upgrading the advantages of Hong Kong and Macao in competitiveness, fostering newly emerging industries, and deepening their cooperation with the mainland.
The central government will continue insisting on the policies of "One Country, Two Systems," "Hong Kong People Govern Hong Kong" and "Macao People Govern Macao," as well as a high degree of autonomy for the SAR governments to handle their internal affairs.
Regarding the issue of achieving a "complete, peaceful reunification" of China, Jia reiterated that it is the common aspiration of all Chinese living both at home and abroad.
In his speech, Jia also praised the "unique role" of overseas Chinese in realizing the great reinvigoration of the Chinese nation.

James Stewart had many great movies

James Stewart had many great movies, including REAR WINDOW and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. A hugely popular star, "Jimmy" was one of the most likable of Hollywood stars. Steward is frequently referred to as Jimmy Stewart.

Stewart's defining role was in VERTIGO, as a private eye obsessed with a beautiful woman, played by Kim Novak. Jimmy Stewart's other notable films include: IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, and REAR WINDOW.

From manufacturing hub to fashion capital

Few may know that Shenzhen, Guangdong province, is not only the nation's garment capital, with 3,000 garment manufacturers employing nearly 500,000 people, but also home to world famous designers.
Monday marked Fashion Shenzhen's fourth appearance at London Fashion week, one of the "Big Four" fashion weeks worldwide.
Fashion Shenzhen, organized by the Shenzhen Garment Industry Association, is a creative arena for showcasing China's design and clothing manufacturing talent. It is also a platform for Shenzhen-based designers to show their latest works.
This year's fashion show featured two of Shenzhen's most prominent talents, Xie Haiping and Deng Hao, at Monday's catwalk in central London's Vauxhall Fashion Scout in the Freemason's Hall.
An exhibition displaying the works of another 20 fashion companies was held the same day at the Grand Connaught Rooms next door.
Xie is something of a London regular having exhibited in 2009 and 2010, whereas Monday saw Deng's London debut.
What Deng brought to the catwalk was a unique floral female knitwear collection that depicts regal Islamic mosques and traditional Chinese temples. The two distinct religious and cultural symbols are mixed to create a contemporary vision.
The collection, in royal reds and luscious greens, is called Flower Devil.
Sleek silhouettes elongate and enhance the female form. Arabesque knitted and printed patterns, creep up the dresses until they reach a floral boom.
Delicate knit and sheer materials are carefully and technically entwined, to create a fluid form. Simplistic soft cable knits have been inventively used to create stunning details.
In comparison, Xie's collection evokes images of beautiful spring days with bright colors and butterfly patterns.
A neon palette splashes color over the pure natural whites and creams, while tulle, taffeta and ruffles are used to create exaggerated, yet feminine, silhouettes.
The Shenzhen Garment Industry Association has made no secret of its ultimate aim to establish a permanent presence in the United Kingdom, with plans to promote more student collaborations between Shenzhen and the UK.
Founder of the Vauxhall Fashion Scout John Walford, who has been working with Shenzhen for the past three years, says: "It really is rewarding to see how this relationship has gone from strength to strength.
"This new exciting student exchange, Chinese collections in the UK and UK collections in China, becomes possible for the first time with the opening of the Shenzhen Fashion School next year," he says.
Watching the show, Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming said that Shenzhen is actually not just a garment manufacturing base, but "well-positioned to be China's fashion and creative capital".

New Song Of Xu Song - Sudi

The new song was released on local time Oct. 20th,2011. It is called 宿敌, which means the old enemy or the hereditary enemy.

Music streaming services

Music streaming services are a convenient way to explore and find and listen to new music. In addition, they are increasingly a great way to create personal playlists and mixes and share them with friends through social networks. The five services listed below are among the very best currently available. In the past, most streaming music services were fee-based, but most now have free ad-based or soon ad-free subscription levels.

1. Spotify

Spotify was founded in Sweden and launched in October of 2008. In less than three years it has become widely celebrated as the leading model for music streaming services worldwide. The primary keys to Spotify's success are its ease of use, access via mobile devices, and integration with Facebook and Twitter social networks. Subscriptions are available at three levels. One is free and ad-supported, the other two require monthly fees. A credit card or pay pal account is required for all subscribers. Currently Spotify is available in the US, UK, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden. Denmark will be added soon.

2. MOG

MOG was founded in 2005 by David Hyman who formerly worked with MTV Interactive, was CEO of the CD information database Gracenote, and co-founder of the online music magazine Addicted To Noise. MOG originally was simply a blog network and music-based social network. In December 2009 the MOG music subscription service was launched. A unique feature of MOG is the automatic radio stations created based around artists. The user has access to a slider that allows them to create a station playing only music by the selected artist or almost entirely just related artists. There are two paid subscription levels for MOG. The higher level allows use of MOG through mobile devices. New users may listen to music free and continue to hear free music if they invite other potential users. MOG is available in the US.

3. Rdio

Rdio was created by co-founders of Skype, the online communication service, and officially launched in August 2010. Rdio is strongly integrated with social media and allows you to follow the listening habits of friends as well as share songs with them. It has two pay subscription levels while currently offering a free trial period. For the free trial, you may sign up through your Facebook account and no credit card is required. Rdio is available in the US and Canada.

4. Rhapsody

Rhapsody is the veteran of music streaming services. It was officially launched in December of 2001. One of Rhapsody's key strengths is the written content provided to accompany the music. Rhapsody has recently begun to integrate with social networking such as Facebook. Rhapsody offers a free trial and multiple paid subscription levels. In January 2011 Rhapsody announced that they had a subscription base of 750,000 users.

5. Slacker

Slacker was founded in 2004 by Celite Milbrandt and Dennis Mudd, former CEO of MusicMatch which has become Yahoo!'s LaunchCast. Slacker is designed as a service for building personal radio stations. Users choose artists they wish to hear and song lists are automatically generated based on those preferences. Slacker may be used for free, but purchasing subscriptions allows more flexibility in what is heard and the ability to skip songs.

Giant Ferris Wheel

TopFashion has been covering the story of how Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and his brother Doug want to dump ten years of planning and the results of an international competition to rebuild the portlands for a megamall, a monorail and a giant ferris wheel. It is a local story with a larger lesson: What happens when a militant anti transit/pro-car, anti-urban/pro-sprawl government tries to overturn every green move of the last decade.
Today Eric Miller of the Cities Centre, Richard Florida of the Martin Prosperity Institute, Richard Sommer of the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Paul Bedford, former Chief Planner, and 148 other planners, urbanists, designers and academics shot back with a devastating letter where they write:

"we are extremely concerned that recent proposals to radically alter plans and development control for the Lower Don Landsare ill-conceived, reckless, and, if adopted, will result in irrevocable harm to the City."
Anyone who cares about process, about urbanism and about building cities will be impressed with this carefully crafted shot across the bows.

Newspaper Dress - Made of "Financial Times"

Newspaper dress, made from 30 copies of the 'Financial Times'
Gary Harvey’s first collection showcased nine of his stunning dresses at the Estethica exhibition at the London Fashion Week (Feb 07). The collection creates a dramatic display designed to change people’s perception of second-hand clothing and create fashion with a conscience. Gary uses material he finds in places like secondhand clothing stores to avoid waste, he says of good quality second hand clothing, people "wear it one or two times then discard it because it's suddenly deemed aesthetically unimportant and out of date when there's years of life left in the garment." His collection "was a comment about thinking about the real cost of the garment that you buy, about that cost being natural resources, exploitation of labour, the biodegradable nature of garments."

Chinese folklore turns to a beautiful story of longing between an immortal lady, Chang’e, who is banished to live on the moon forever, and her mortal husband, Houyi, far below on earth. This September on the day when the moon is the brightest and fullest, Chang’e and Houyi can find each other and are reunited. For centuries on this night, Chinese people have lit up the earth with candles and lanterns to help light the way for the lovers’ reunion. This tradition has evolved to an appreciation of the moon and its symbolic meaning. While looking up at the full moon, people think of their loved ones, wherever they are in the world, and this brings them a little closer”.

Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

On Chinese Lunar Aug. 15th, Chinese will go home to celebrate their traditional festival - Mid-Autumn Festival.

In Chinese dichotomy, the sun is yang (positive, active, or male) and the moon is yin (negative, passive, or female). According to the book Chou Li, the Chou emperors (1122-249 B.C.) had the custom of praying to the moon on the 15th night of the eighth lunar month. In the Ching dynasty, there were a sun altar in eastern Peking and a moon altar in western Peking; at the time of every autumnal equinox, the emperor offered sacrifices and prayed to the moon at the moon altar.
Before switching to the Gregorian calendar officially in 1911, the Chinese had used a lunar calendar since time immemorial; and even today, the Chinese still celebrate their traditional festivals by the lunar calendar. In each lunar month, the first day (the new moon) and the 15th day (the full moon) are major events; and the 15th day of the first month (the Lantern Festival) and the 15th day of the eighth month (Mid-Autumn Festival, September 9th this year on the Gregorian calendar) are the largest celebrations besides the Lunar New Year and the Dragon Boat Festival.

The Chinese Cupid is called "the old man under the moon" (月老) and uses a red thread to tie a man's and woman's feet together to make them man and wife--be they from hostile families or widely separated places.
The most lunatic mortal in Chinese history could have been the great poet Li Po (A.D. 701-762), who once invited the moon to have a drink with him and his shadow to form a band of three. Li finally drowned in a lake in an effort to catch the moon when he was drunk one night. Other Chinese legends about the moon abound.
Legends of the Moon

Moon cakes go best with oolong or jasmine tea.
Hou Yi ( 后羿) was a great archer and architect, who shot down nine extra suns that had suddenly appeared in the sky and thus kept the earth from being scorched. He also built a palace of jade for the Goddess of the Western Heaven. For this, he was rewarded with a pill containing the elixir of immortality, but with strings attached--he must fast and pray for a year before taking it. His wife, Chang O ( 嫦娥), whose beauty was surpassed only by her curiosity, discovered and swallowed the pill and in no time soared to the moon and became a permanent resident there. Upon reaching the moon, Chang O, in dismay, coughed up the pill, which turned into a jade rabbit that, day and night, pounds out a celestial elixir for the immortals.
Moon gazing
Another permanent lunar resident of Chinese origin is Wu Kang ( 吴刚), a shiftless fellow who changed apprenticeships all the time before disappointing his last master, who was an immortal. From him Wu learned to be immortal himself, but he was punished by being required to chop down a cassia tree in the moon, an impossible mission. The cut in the tree heals completely the same day, so Wu Kang is still chopping away for eternity. Some Chinese crave to drink his cassia blossom wine.

The Chinese believe that the moon is at its largest and brightest, and Chang O at her most beautiful, on the 15th night of the eighth lunar month. They are at least half-right, for at that time most of China is in the dry season and the moon looms brightest. It's also cool then, a perfect time to celebrate the harvest which has just concluded; hence, the Mid-Autumn Festival is also called the Harvest Festival. The festival is a time for family reunions to appreciate the moon ( 赏月 , shangyue) and eat moon cakes together. Bathed in bright moonshine and with the company of chrysanthemum and cassia blossoms, poets eat crab meat and moon cake, drink tea and wine, and versify the night away.

The Chinese custom of eating moon cake was first recorded in the reign of the emperor Hsi Tzung (A.D. 874-889) of the Tang dynasty and became popular in the Sung dynasty (A.D. 960-1279) The moon cake is traditionally made in the shape of a full moon, symbolizing union and perfection, is usually about the size of a doughnut, and is stuffed with a variety of fillings such as bean paste, egg yolk, lotus seeds, dates, pineapple, walnuts, almonds, and sesame. The crafty Chu Yuan-chang, founder of the Ming dynasty, instigated a rebellion against the Mongol rulers by concealing a call to revolt in moon cakes, leading to the downfall of the Yuan dynasty.

There are many styles of moon cake in China; the most popular in Taiwan are the Cantonese, Soochow, and Taiwanese styles. The Cantonese moon cake is thicker and heavier, while the Soochow and Taiwanese ones have a crispy skin. In the last couple of years a new breed of refrigerated, unbaked moon cake has been gaining popularity, especially among youngster; and durian, coconut meat, vanilla, tea, and coffer have added as ingredients.

Most Chinese consume moon cakes given to them by relatives, friend, employers, or public relations people.Hence, brands matter. Among the most famous are Kee Wah, Maria's and shin Tung Yang. Moon cakes go best with oolong or jasmine tea.

It takes the moon about 29 1/2 days to revolve around the earth, and the Chinese lunar month is either 29 or 30 days. An extra month(called a leap month) is necessary about every three years. There will be a second eight lunar month in 1995. The 15th of the first eight lunar month is celebrated as the Mid-Autumn Festival, which has been designed a public holiday by the Republic of China government. Have a nice holiday, and remember moon calkes taste best when shared by family members or lovers, or both.

911 - 10th anniversary

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

Families, rescue workers and politicians gathered today amid a mix of tears, applause and patriotic cheers of "U-S-A" at 9/11 memorials in New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
The 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks brought special ceremonies at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the field in Shanksville. Pa., where the planes crashed. President Obama laid a wreath of white flowers outside the Pentagon as a brass quintet played "Amazing Grace" this afternoon, before he and first lady Michelle Obama spoke with family members of victims.
Earlier, Obama read a Psalm at the morning ceremony at the World Trade Center, and then arrived to applause and chants of "U-S-A, U-S-A" at a wreath-laying ceremony in Shanksville at noon, where he and the first lady shook hands and spoke with many members of the crowd gathered there.
In Virginia, family members and first responders held a moment of silence with Vice President Joe Biden to honor the time when American Airlines flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon.
Biden said that what took place after the plane struck the Pentagon "was far more remarkable than the damage inflicted in the building behind me" as Pentagon employees and first responders risked their lives to help those trapped by the plane's impact.
To applause, he declared, "I can say without fear of contradiction or being accused of exaggeration, the 9/11 generation ranks among the greatest our nation has ever produced. And it was born, it was born, it was born right here on 9/11."
In New York, the annual reading of the nearly 3,000 names was punctuated this year by family members' visits to the memorial fountains at the new 9/11 Memorial Plaza, in which the names of those killed are etched in bronze. Some placed a flag or flowers.

One woman threw her arms on the name of her loved one, put her head down and sobbed. Many took paper and pencil and making an etching, as one might at a graveyard.
Many members of the audience could be seen and heard crying throughout the reading, while some shouted, "We love you," as the name of their loved one was said aloud.
"My big brother, Joseph Michael Ciccone, we love you and miss you," one speaker said. "It's 10 years, but it's still not easy. Your family loves you and misses you."
"She wanted to work for justice but died from injustice," Tanya Garcia said of her 21-year-old sister, Marlyn, a graduate of NYC's John Jay College of Criminal Justice who died while working at Marsh & McLennan Cos., a financial services firm that lost 295 employees and 63 contractors in the attack. "She was a victim of horrendous terrorism."
New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg opened the ceremony with the first city-wide moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. to commemorate the moment when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower. Obama then read from Psalm 46, which starts, "God is our refuge and strength."
The ceremony also included performances by Yo-Yo Ma, James Taylor and Paul Simon.
Among the crowd gathering at the memorial plaza this morning were children too young to have been alive 10 years ago, clutching Teddy bears and wearing dresses with flags sewn into them, family members wearing T-shirts with the words "Never Forget" emblazoned on them, and T-shirts commemorating members of those fire department ladder units and police precincts who perished in the attack.
Mario Montoya came to remember his best friend, Harry Ramos, who worked on the 82nd floor of the North Tower.
"Every year, I come here to feel closer to him," Montoya said.
Police and security presence at the memorial and throughout Lower Manhattan remained significant; police dogs and armed guards were present throughout the ceremony. New York City police commissioner Raymond Kelly told ABC News that there was no new information on a suspected terror plot, but "no reason to lessen our alert status."
After the Shanksville ceremony, Obama visited the Pentagon. He is also scheduled to attend a Concert for Hope at the Kennedy Center in Washington tonight, and deliver a 15-minute speech on the attacks.

Teaching "respectable" but "arduous" job in China

The two surveys, one soliciting 90,964 public responses and the other a poll of 51,488 teachers, were conducted by the China YouthDaily research center in the run-up to the country's 24th Teacher's Day on Sept. 10.
About 85 percent of the public believed teaching was an "arduous" job, and 78 percent described the profession as "respectable," the Beijing-based newspaper said.
Students show a drawing at Huanfeng Primary School in Hanshan County, east China’s Anhui Province, Sept. 9, 2008. The students put their hand prints on a huge cloth to form number ’9.10’, indicating the date of Chinese Teacher’s Day, as a gift for their teachers.
The results also revealed 10 percent of teachers often got sick. They listed the high pressure of helping students to achieve good academic results, long working hours and the low pay as the top factors detrimental to health.
About 55 percent of teachers said they worked eight to 10 hours daily, while 26 percent said they averaged more than 10 hours a day. Only 19 percent said they worked less than eight hours.
"I usually work more than 10 hours a day," a middle-school math teacher surnamed Pan was quoted as saying. "I have to correct students homework and prepare my lessons after work. Sometimes, I must tutor some students to help them achieve good marks in exams."
Teacher's Day was launched in 1985 to improve the social status of educators and to ask the entire nation to respect them and to seek knowledge.
Despite the great pressure, 54 percent of the teachers said they would take education as their lifetime profession.

5 Ways to Deepen (Almost) Any Yoga Pose

1. Practice, practice, practice. It might sound obvious, but when you're looking to deepen your understanding of a particular pose, make a point to practice.

2. Hold it. I'm not usually a fan of holding any pose for a long period of time. (I'm impatient, and I like to move!) But I've noticed that most of my little breakthroughs for a pose or a grouping of poses have come when a teacher has encouraged me to stick with it and hold a pose even when I'm uncomfortable. I'm convinced that this is when real transformation happens.

3. Breathe. Take a deep inhale to make space in your body. As you exhale deepen your pose--twist a little more, bend forward just a little more, and so on. Repeat.

4. Learn the story behind it. When I learned that Warrior I, II, and III are representations of Shiva's rage when he learned his first wife Sati had been insulted, the pose took on a new meaning for me. Whenever I become frustrated that my teacher asks me to hold Warrior for longer than I'd like, this story pops into my head and I manage to stay just a few more breaths.

5. Let go. Sometimes the best way to deepen a pose is to stop trying so darn hard! Let go of unnecessary muscle tension. Let go of expectations. Let of the need to do more, be more, or have more. Deeper poses and deeper practice will come to you in time.
